Kevin served his country as a field radio operator for four and a half years while stationed in Pendleton, where he traveled the world to ensure the safety and efficacy of communication channels. After spending about 20 years living overseas, Kevin returned home to Fort Myers after his father brought him a plane ticket, missing him terribly. Kevin decided to stay;
Tragically, his father passed away in 2019, triggering a series of health issues that included heart problems, chronic pain, anxiety, and depression. The loss of his job added to the mounting challenges, transforming his life into an uphill battle. Despite receiving support from his landlord for a year, Kevin found himself homeless. As he waited for a permanent place to live, he moved into the local homeless coalition’s housing.
Fortunately, Kevin’s VA case manager referred him to Volunteers of America of Florida’s (VOAFL) transitional housing in Punta Gorda. On October 14th, 2022, he found a haven in Punta Gorda, where he finally had the security of a roof over his head.
Kevin is extremely grateful for the plethora of support he experienced. He feels acknowledged and cared for as a military veteran, amplifying his sense of belonging and dignity.
His association with VOAFL reached a significant milestone on March 22nd when Kevin received his keys to move from VOAFL’s transitional housing into permanent housing. His preference to stay in Punta Gorda speaks volumes about the goodwill from the community, which Kevin cherishes deeply.
After overcoming his adversities and securing permanent housing, Kevin remains closely involved with VOAFL. Today, he volunteers as a driver for the VOAFL, where he once resided. This role offers him a chance to pay it forward, helping other veterans like him navigate their paths to independence.
