When Volunteers of America was founded, a “volunteer” was someone whose vocation was to serve others through a commitment to a mission. Today, we are still staffed by mission-driven professionals working to support individuals and build thriving communities, only now we call them “employees.”

After losing his fiancée to cancer last summer and experiencing homelessness, Corey connected with our Gainesville SSVF program, where support was provided to help him and his family regain stability. Today, he is giving back in a powerful way by organizing “Strike Out Cancer,” a cancer awareness and prevention event honoring his fiancée’s memory and supporting others impacted by cancer.![]()
